Problem set #8; assigned March 30 (1 and 2 are adapted from JN)
  1. A solar cell has an open circuit voltage of 0.85 V. Assume that the dark current can be described by the ideal diode equation. What is the fill factor for this solar cell?
  2. A solar cell has a short circuit current density of 30 mA cm-2 and open circuit voltage of 0.60 V under one sun illumination. Use the ideal diode equation to calculate the open circuit voltage which is expected under 100 suns.
  3. Show that the general equation for the electron currents, Jn = mn n [(dEF,n)/dx], reduces to the familiar drift and diffusion form when the electron affinity and band structure are independent of position.
  4. Assume that a thin piece of p-doped semiconductor of thickness d is illuminated by light such that ad << 1. Also assume that surface recombination dominates over bulk recombination. What will be the shape of the minority carrier distribution n(x)?
